Are You a Minimalist?
For the most part, we live in a “more is better” culture—we love to have more, newer things. I enter homes where every family member owns an iPad, and if it’s lost, a new one has arrived by nightfall. When a child turns sixteen and gets a learner’s permit, he or she is given a new vehicle. Big-screen TVs, replaced by the latest flat screen, languish in the garage. Clothing is purchased and worn once or forgotten. I’ve taken carloads of items with the tags still on to Goodwill. We keep up with the proverbial Joneses and savor the high from a shopping spree. Seldom do we take a moment to realize the nuttiness of this scenario, which in no way feeds our souls.
Adopting minimalist principles might just offer a meaningful alternative. In Minimalism: Live a Meaningful Life, Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus outline their minimalist philosophy. A period of loss and difficulty forced them to ask themselves what was truly important. Eschewing corporate success, big houses, and expensive stuff as paths to fulfillment, they embrace less while concentrating on five major aspects of life: health, relationships, passion, growth, and contribution.
There’s also the 2013 documentary Tiny: A Story About Living Small, in which filmmaker Christopher Smith decides to put down roots and build a tiny home just before his thirtieth birthday—despite having never built anything like it before. In addition to Christopher and his girlfriend, the film introduces six other tiny-house dwellers who stripped down to explore a different meaning of “home” and the value of living with less.
You may not totally embrace minimalism, but you might choose to adopt aspects of it into your present lifestyle. It’s worth considering whether you could indeed be happy with less while having more in other areas outside your current focus. What have you got to lose but that technological graveyard in the garage, a pile of rarely worn clothing, too much weight around your middle, or a five-thousand-square-foot home when eighteen hundred would make you much happier?
